Ami’s Mesa wins The Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes Grade II
Ivan Dalos’s Ami’s Mesa cut back in distance and put her unbeaten season on the line in last Monday’s Grade II Masters.
Ami’s Mesa didn’t disappoint as she wore down the game Bar of Gold in deep stretch in posting her 3rd straight stake win. Ami’s Mesa also broke the track record for 6 ½ furlongs in a snappy 114.68 held by 2 time Master champ Groupie Doll!! Longshot Cavalia took the field through an opening half of 45.18. Bar of Gold was second. Bar of Gold moved up to confront Cavalia on the turn and gained a brief lead in the middle of the stretch, but Ami’s Mesa was rolling, Ami’s Mesa got the lead inside the sixteenth pole and scooted clear to win by a length under the confident ride by Luis Contreras. The Josie Carroll trained Ami’s Mesa earned $240,000 for her effort. Bar of Gold was second by 1 ¾ lengths over Cavalia in third. The order of finish was completed by Pretty Perfection, Tulsa Queen, Indulgent, Ginger N Rye, Carolina Shag, Artesian, Code Warrior, Clothes Fall Off and Candid Cathy.
Gigantic Breeze wins The Presque Isle Mile
Trainer Alexander McPherson’s Gigantic Breeze found himself in an unusual position of being last in the first turn, but a heady ride from Mario Pino by wisely not to press the issue, allowing Gigantic Breeze to settle into stride. The gelding was last almost 8 lengths back at the midway point of the $200,000, 1 mile race. Gigantic Breeze began to make up ground while racing inside the far turn. He shot through inside the leaders cutting the corner and powered clear down the stretch to win by an impressive 4 lengths!
The final time was 135.62, defending race winner Ghost Hunter rallied on the outside to be second. The favorite War Correspondent finished third, Western Elegance was fourth.
This was the first Stakes victory for Gigantic Breeze outside of his home of Ontario!
Stardoza wins The Mrs. Henry D. Paxson Memorial Stakes
Tim Girten’s Stardoza wired the field for a 2 length score in the $100,000 Mrs. Henry D. Paxson Memorial Stake for PA Bred 2 year Old Fillies. Under Pablo Morales, Stardoza established a quick 2 length lead. She continued to edge clear in a half in 46.36. She widened her lead to 4 lengths in the stretch and was never seriously threatened. Finishing the 6 Furlongs in a good 110.95 O’Paddy was a clear second over P. Sue, with favorite Bronx Beauty fading to fourth.
For trainer Tim Girten, he sweeps all the 2 year Old Pa Bred Stakes races for the year! He also won the boys version with Oldzfourfortytwo which he owns and trains.
