Fast Start for Trainer Brooks
With 40 races run in the first week, trainer Gerald Brooks had a week that he may never forget. Brooks had an astonishing 10 wins out of 19 starts or winning 25% of the races run the entire week! Gerry has been a fixture at Presque Isle since its’ opening over 10 years ago. Never winning a trainer’s title but in the top five (5) the past few years. I’m sure with his fast start he now sees that elusive first title in reach. Several other trainers, John Bourke, Tim Girtin, Kim Puhl, Eduardo Rojas and Henry Miller have had a good start for the meet with 2 wins each.
Jockey Pablo Morales and newcomer Luis Garcia finished the week with 8 wins each. Ronnie Allen, who reached the 3,500 win threshold, had 5 wins and the Bug-Boy Addiel Ayala had a good start with 3 wins.
Balandeen took control at the top of the stretch and went on to win this year’s version of “The Tom Ridge Stakes” (for 3 year old colts and geldings) by a widening 1 ¾ lengths, in a good time of 110.31 for 6 Furlongs! The 3 year old colt by Bernardini was trained by Chris Hartman who was making his 1st visit to Presque Isle Downs.
Balandeen was piloted by Albin Jimenez. Mike Maker’s En Hanse, who set the past, was a good second. Local Maiden Bugle Barry 65/1 on the board overcame trouble at the top of the stretch to finish 3rd.
Nominations close Wednesday, June 7 for “The Satin and Lace” for Fillies and Mares, 3 year olds and upward, going 5½ Furlongs and the boys version “The Karl Boyes Memorial Northwestern PA Stakes” for 3 year olds and upward going 5½ furlongs. Both carry a $100,000 purse.
