Barn Notes #8
THE MIDWAY POINT
As Mid-Summer is upon us, the 2017 Presque Isle Season has reached the mid-point of the 100 day meet. There seems to be no surprises in the standings as the same veteran trainers and riders are in front.
Veteran Trainer Gerald Brooks has an 8 win lead on the 2-time champ Teresa Connelly. Teresa seems to be heating up the past couple of weeks as her horses are now reaching their best strides (winning 7 out of 14 races). Ron Potts, Dale Capuano, and Tim Girten are all having fine meets.
After 50 days of racing, the Jockey standings have Pablo Morales drawing off to nearly a 30 win lead on his closest rivals; Luis Garcia (42), Ronnie Allen (39); Mario Pino (35) and Huber Villa Gomez (35) all are having their typical solid meet. Bug Boy Addiel Ayala has shown that he could have a bright feature with (34) wins.
Leading Trainer Gerald Brooks trains the filly Sky Flower who is North America’s winningest horse with 7 wins in the 2017 Racing Season. She is a perfect 5 for 5 here at Presque Isle Downs. A recent $15,000, claimed at the Fair Grounds, Sky Flower has shown a liking to the Tapeta™ surface as she has been beating up older ALW horses on the grounds. Trainer Brooks has his sights set for the Grade II $400,000 Masters near the end of the meet.
THE $100,000 MALVERN ROSE STAKES – REGISTERED PA BREDS
The 11th Running of The Malvern Rose Stakes for 3 year old Fillies going a mile drew a competitive field of 11 runners, including a Rodrigo Madrigal Sr. entry.
Ann L. Walsh’s Tulsa Queen should be the post time favorite coming off a stakes win in the Duchess L Stakes at Woodbine and her 8 for 9 on the board on synthetic surfaces.
Jonathan Sheppard’s Rose Tree should be Tulsa Queen’s main foe. She has won 3 out of 4 races including the Blue Mountain Juvenile Fillies Stake at Penn National. Her lone defeat was a good second in the New Start Stake also at Penn.
The Malvern Rose could produce a huge upset as only 3 out of the 11 runners have won at the one mile distance.
The Malvern Rose will run Sunday, August 6 and is carded as the 6th race with an approximate post time of 7:30pm.
