2018 Tom Ridge Stakes Preview (May 21, 2018)
For Immediate ReleaseFri, May 18, 2018
Erie, PA – Friday, May 18, 2018 Twelve three-year-old colts and geldings will converge at Presque Isle Downs Monday evening, May 21, filling the starting gate to dash for the cash in the Tom Ridge Stakes. Named for prominent Pennsylvania Congressman and Governor, the twelfth running of the Tom Ridge boasts a purse of $100,000, and is carded as the fifth race on the PID Tapeta surface oval. The winner of this six furlong sprint will gallop off with a $60,000 share of the purse.
Still in the early phase of their careers, these sophomore sprinters are yet in the maturing stages of their running abilities. Consequently, trainers are focusing on improving running styles from their horses in search of victory and even more lucrative racing opportunities. And the puzzle of the betting public is to identify those horses who may now be blossoming into seasoned champions in their three-year-old campaign.
Among this diverse field are several who have already shown an affinity for the Presque Isle Downs artificial racing surface. Pennsylvania-bred Oldzfourfortytwo has won twice here, but has not yet raced in his three-year-old season. Trainer Ron Potts is high on his Pennsylvania-bred Tudox Expectations, who has won twice at Presque Isle, and most recently scored victory in a stakes race at famed Gulfstream Park in Florida.
Invaders, though, abound, and the wagering public will be hard pressed to determine the horse best poised to score a big win. Nationally prominent Kentucky-based trainer Wesley Ward brings in highly rated jockey Joel Rosario to ride Shangroyal, who won a high-quality allowance affair at Keeneland in April.
Successful NY-based trainer Chris Englehart brings in from Aqueduct his NY-bred star Flash Drive. This gray colt easily won a state-bred allowance in February, and has breezed with four recent stellar workouts since. Bettors might be willing to wager that Flash Drive can dash wire-to-wire.
From Kentucky, veteran trainer Michael Lauer ships his contender, The Money Dance, who has recently won two-in-a-row, a maiden win at Oaklawn Park and an impressive score in a high quality allowance field at Belmont Park.
Thus the stage is set for a strong showing of youth, speed, color and ambition in the Tom Ridge Stakes. The bettors will be scratching their heads and perusing their racing forms to spot the winner in what appears to be a wide open race. It all points to an exciting race whose winner will be determined in the final steps. The competitive nature of these young thoroughbreds, and their seasoned jockeys, will guarantee a thrilling show for all race fans. First post time is 5:25 P.M. See you at the races!!!
