Full Field Set for Karl Boyes Stakes
For Immediate ReleaseMon, Jun 18, 2018
Erie, PA – Once again Presque Isle Downs attracts a well-seasoned field of twelve colts and geldings for the 12th running of the Karl Boyes Stakes. Named for long-time state legislator Karl W. Boyes, this race will be held as the sixth of eight races on the card Monday, June 18. The winner of this 5 ½ furlong dash for cash will pocket a $60,000 share of the total purse of $100,000. And the PID Tapeta racing surface, always fast, will enhance the brilliance of these experienced speedsters.
Prominent among this full gate of equine competitors is Rocket Heat, who has twice won this year, and is the leading money winner in the field. Trainer Carlos Martin is hoping that his charge will run successfully on Presque Isle Downs’ Tapeta racing surface, much as he has in turf races on the grass. The wagering public should also note that this horse is quick from the gate and will try to win in wire-to-wire fashion.
Extravagant Kid has also paid for his oats and alfalfa by showing an affinity for turf racing, and his owners are anticipating that this quality can translate into victory on PID’s artificial surface. And most recently, Extravagant Kid ran a strong second in a $100,000 event at Woodbine Race Course in Toronto in his first and only synthetic start. Leading PID jockey Pablo Morales will ride.
Significant wagering attention in the Karl Boyes Stakes should be extended to Majestic Slew, who will use his passport to cross the border from Canada. Trainer Michael DePaulo is banking on Majestic Slew’s proven experience and ability on the synthetic surface at Woodbine. Also crossing the border to invade America’s North Coast will be Canada’s top jockey, Rafael Manuel Hernandez.
Also of note in the Boyes field is 5 year old Commend, owned by Kentucky’s renowned Claiborne Farm, and trained by Eclipse Award winner and Racing Hall of Famer Bill Mott. Mott is a highly-regarded, nationally prominent conditioner, and among America’s best trainers for turf horses. He is most famous, of course, as being trainer of the incomparable miler Cigar, who won 16 consecutive races in 1995-96. Can Mott’s talents help make Commend a winner at PID and add to the win total of jockey Edgar Prado of over 7000 races??
Local challengers are also worthy of consideration in the Boyes Stakes. They and their jockeys may benefit from racing experience here at Presque Isle Downs. Downtown Cowboy merits serious notice, having won 11 of 20 races on the Erie oval, including an impressive three-length win in his only start this year on May 21. Veteran PID trainer Ron Potts has high hopes for his Pennsylvania-bred sprinter, Jaguar Poz, who also has taken well to our local racing surface, and may close well on the field at the finish.
Thus a talented field of seasoned, quality sprinters will provide the excitement of color, action, speed, and wagering fun that only thoroughbred racing action can provide. You can bet on it!!........here at the track in Erie or at simulcast outlets nationwide. First post time Monday evening is 5:25. See you at the races!!
