Pennsylvania-breds take center stage at Presque Isle Downs this Sunday, July 8, 2018, as the local synthetic oval plays host to The Northern Fling Stakes and The Leematt Stakes.  Our track, along with Penn National in Harrisburg and Parx Race Course in Philadelphia, is proud to crown Pennsylvania’s home-bred champion sprinters and milers, male and female.

Pennsylvania has increasingly shown its prowess and influence in breeding and racing and continues to provide high quality runners to the nation’s thoroughbred racing industry. The Pennsylvania tracks consistently offer state-bred races with substantial prize moneys in an effort to promote and cultivate the state’s breeding facilities and racing programs.

The Northern Fling features filly and mare milers and is carded as Sunday’s 5th race.  The total purse is also a husky $100,000, and nineteen runners were entered in search of the cash.  Racing criteria narrowed the field to a full gate of 12 in this quest for the fastest mile over PID’s all-weather track.

The wagering public may tend to focus on the rivalry between Imply, the talented winner of last year’s Northern Fling, and runner-up Great Soul.  Most recently, these same two ran to a similar 1-2 result at the $100,000 Lyphard Stakes on the turf at Penn National last month. They also represent the top two money earners in this competitive field, combining for over $700,000 in career winnings.

Nine Pennsylvania-bred colts and geldings will face off in the one-mile Leemat Stakes in Sunday’s 7th Race.  The winner will canter off with a $60,000 share of the $100,000 total purse.  Successful Kentucky-based trainer Mike Maker brings in two runners, Bern James Bern, and the versatile, seasoned miler Fast and Accurate, the winner of over $400,000.  Fast and Accurate will retain the services of leading PID jockey Pablo Morales.

Also rating serious consideration in the wagering is Grasshoppin’, winner of over $500,000, and lately the stellar victor in the Charles Lyman Pennsylvania-bred stakes at Parx in Philadelphia.  Bettors may also place value wagers on the closing and improving form of Someday Jones, son of the famous Pennsylvania native Smarty Jones.

Other credible contenders can clearly upset these favorites, for the challenges of getting a thoroughbred first to the wire are many.  Races are not won on paper charts and forms, and many factors can influence the final outcome.   The PID finish line will be lined with fans to see which of these equine athletes can overcome all obstacles and smile for their winner’s circle photo op.  See you at the races!!  And you can bet on that!!  First post is 5:25 P.M.
